Teach Yourself Acoustic Guitar – Do You Want To Stop Dropping Your Guitar Pick

January 13, 2010 By: Guitarizm Category: Arts, Entertainment and Music

It is a lot easier to get a good sound out of your guitar if you use a pick at first..

Although strumming is possible using just your fingers there is no point in making life difficult for yourself.

Here are 3 simple steps you can use right now to hold the pick more easily.

Don’t hold the pick between your fingertips

Another crucial mistake new guitarists make is holding the pick between their fingertips. Doing this makes you feel as if you have more control, especially when you start playing. They do this because it feels as if you have more control at first. A better idea is to hold the pick between between the edge of your thumb and the rim of your index finger. If you grip your guitar pick between the tip of your finger and your thumb you will probably drop it because you have very little grip.

Holding The Plectrum With Only Two Fingers

A lot of new guitarists will make the mistake of holding their guitar pick with 3 fingers because it feels easier initially. Even great guitarists do this sometimes, but you are only making things tricky for yourself. If you are playing advanced style technique like harmonics or finger tapping having an extra finger free is a great bonus. Using just 2 fingers to hold the pick gives you far more flexibility for delicate movements. If you grip the pick too firmly (e.g. with 3 fingers) the sound may sound uneven because of the angle you hit the string at.

Pick A Guitar Pick That Works For You

When you initially begin playing the guitar it is a good idea to get a pick of a medium thickness. A lightweight pick will feel flimsy in your fingers as you play and will be difficult for you to play your guitar with. Thick picks tend to strum the strings a little too hard for a beginner. One of my favorite picks when I started learning guitar was the Dunlop 0.6mm nylon. It’s easy to get a grip on, feels good to hold and it’s not to hard, but it produces an excellent sound.

Do Not Clench Your Fist

Clenching your fist as you hold the pick will result in a loss of control because all of the movement must come from the elbow and not the wrist.

After you have mastered holding the guitar pick the right way it’s time to start learning some guitar chords. Check out teach yourself guitar
