The Benefits Of Other Musical Styles When Learning To Play Guitar

January 20, 2010 By: Guitarizm Category: Arts, Entertainment and Music

While you are learning to play guitar, it’s all to easy to get mired into a rut of playing only 1 style. Whilst this is often a large amount of fun to do, it won’t help you evolve as a guitarist very much, and could light the way to you becoming somewhat held back as a guitar player.

Speaking as a metal guitar player, back when I started learning to play guitar I instinctively moved towards towards the heavy shredders around at the time, but that started to restrict the kind of licks and riffs I was able to play, and I realized that learning to play guitar was about more than only following your heroes.

The key to helping yourself onwards as a musician is to make sure you try out some different methods that may complement those that you arealready familiar with. For rock and heavy metal guitar players, useful styles of music to test out would be the blues and classical music.

Blues playing and classical guitar feature a lot of the methods that finished up making the heavy metal and rock sounds of today, and studying these methods will in turn add another layer to your own guitar playing. The key’s to never restrict yourself when Learning To Play Guitar. Limiting the styles you learn limits your development, and the very last thing you would like is to get stuck playing the same repeatedly again without any room to grow and create better music.

The fundamentals of each technique might take a little getting familiar with, but the effect on your own individual abilities will be tough to miss. Guitarists you could listen to may include legends such as Yngwie Malmsteen (for the classical influences), Michael Lee Firkins (for country influences) or Ritchie Kotzen (for blues influences).

Check out some country or bluegrass, or pop rock. Try anything that could be a small beyond your comfort section along with your own central inspiration sources. Not merely will you become a far more rounded player, but playing around with these other styles will help Learning To Play Guitar be much more fun and much more gratifying.
